How Can Your Past Affects Your Performance in JEE

IIT-JEE is the one of the toughest entrance exam in the world. But the mentality of the students makes it even more tougher and sometimes makes it easier. This is the reason we see every year, some kind of miracles, students expecting a rank under 100 sometimes gets a rank under 10 or sometimes above 1000 and also some students who are not even in the race or have very few chances to qualify may gets a very good rank (I am talking about selection due to reservation).

All this dramatic results happens due to our past. You may be surprised by this but it is actually the truth because I am the one who experienced it. I will try to explain this to you.

Suppose there are two students Siddharth and Varun. Siddharth always gets good marks. In every exam he is scoring above 90 percent. As you all know for scoring more than 90% you must have to answer almost all question in your exam.  As Siddharth is a brilliant student, he attempts all question and gets what he deserves. He enjoyed this momentum till 12th board exam.

On the other hand, Varun is average student. He  generally scores anywhere between 50-70. Sometimes more than 70 or less than 50 based on subject and toughness level.

Now for JEE Mains both the students prepared according to their strength. No doubt, due to good academic record in school, Siddharth has a benefit and he grasp the concept faster than Varun. It is normal for everyone to expect good marks from Siddharth than Varun.

But it did not come true. Varun gets more marks than Siddharth. Why ??? Am I joking …..No

In JEE Mains we get 4 marks for correct answer and minus 1 for incorrect answers. As I told Siddharth had a long past record of scoring around 90 percent, so in exam time he cannot resist himself from attempting around 85 questions out of 90. He confidently knows the answer of around 50-55 questions but due to his past he answered another 35 questions which is definitely going to be costly for him.

Lets make some calculations :
He can solve 50 questions correctly and can score around 200 marks which is a very very good score.
But he tries to solve 85 questions due to his past reputation, and now he gets only 40 correct out of that 50 because doing extra 35 questions reduce his time to solve that 50 questions and in that extra 35 question which he tried unnecessary, he may only get around 5 correct answers.
So now his score becomes : 40*4 – 10*1 + 5*4 -30*1 = 135 marks
It is 65 marks lower than what he can actually get.

On the other hand, Varun had no pressure to solve 85 questions. He always getting aroung 60% so the situation seems more comfortable for him. He don’t want to solve all question. JEE Mains has 90 questions and 3 hours time to solve. It means you get 2 minutes to solve 1 question. But Varun has no mind to solve all 90 question. He already knows that he wants to solve only 45 questions, so he gets 4 minutes to solve 1 question. He solved 45 questions and gets 40 correct answers.
So his total comes to be :
40*4-  5*1 = 155 marks

So now you can see how a average students beats a brilliant students. This is something similar to the story of Rabbit and Tortoise. Yes, it is similar. But it is not a story. It is based on my experience.

The aim of this article is to tell that you should know your position before giving the exam. Accepting what you are always help to succeed in life.

A Must Read Interview of IITian Paritosh Mukhija

Paritosh Mukhija is an IITian who has done B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delh passed out in 2007. He worked for 4 years with a British retailer as an analytical consultant and then recently completed his MBA from Kellogg School of Management, US and IESE Business School, Spain. He would soon start working for a Strategy Consulting firm in Dubai.

What inspired you for Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)?
Physics and Mathematics has always interested me, hence engineering was a natural choice.

What is required to get into IIT?
Hardwork, discipline, an interest in science and proper guidance.

During your study at Kota, did the environment of Kota city contributed to your success?
Definitely. Kota has training camp feel to it. You have almost nil distractions and everybody around you is so motivated and inspired. There is a lot of healthy competition. It has such a great atmosphere to work. I really missed that later, even in IIT Delhi and Kellogg School of Management, which are some of the best educational institutions in the world.

How best a student can take the advantage of coaching in a good coaching institute?
If I have to say two things that would be- don’t miss classes and give your best shot at solving the daily practice problems(homeworks). After studying at some of the best institutes in the world, I can safely say that Kota has some of the smartest and most dedicated teachers. You guys are really lucky to have the best guidance. So make sure to make the most of your time there and trust me, you’d always have fond memories of Resonance.

What are the Do’s and Don’ts for students who are taking coaching in Kota?
  • Do’s
  • Don’t miss class
  • Give your 100% at solving the daily practice problems
  •  Revise notes frequently
  •  Ask for help from friends and teachers in topics that you find difficult
  • Focus only on the subject material recommended by teachers

Don’ts
  •       You have left your friends and family to come to Kota to study, so don’t waste time facebooking or gossiping. You will have plenty of free time for extracurricular activities once you make it to the IITs.

How to gain confidence and develop interest in subjects?
Practice, practice and practice. Attend classes, ask questions, solve problems, take tests and review mistakes.

How to balance IIT-JEE syllabus and school syllabus?
Slow and steady win the race. Keep an eye on school syllabus and put aside a couple of hours every weekend to study the school syllabus so that you don’t have to devote a lot of time during board exams.

How to plan studies and daily routine to have maximum productivity and output?
Everyone is different. Some like to study in the early morning and some late nights. Identify what works best for you. Just make sure that your routine aligns with the exam schedule of IIT-JEE.
Don’t underestimate the importance of a good 7-hour sleep, balanced healthy diet and moderate physical activity. Create a daily schedule to enhance your productivity.

How to perform in IIT-JEE with the same confidence as in institute’s periodic tests?
Take every test with the same seriousness as you would take IIT-JEE. Remember that getting nervous would only lead to making a few mistakes. If you have prepared well, there is no reason that you should get stresses. IIT-JEE is just another test. Take as many tests as possible so that you feel comfortable on the actual IIT-JEE day. You may also practice some yoga or deep-breathing techniques, if that helps you feel calm and focused.

How to be emotionally strong and cope up with the stress of IIT-JEE preparation?
Don’t stress at all. It’s not the end of the world. Give your 100% and leave the result to destiny. Some of my friends couldn’t make it to the IITs but they are doing much better than me professionally today because they didn’t give up. It is very satisfying if you know that you are giving your personal best and that’s all what matters.

How is the environment at IIT where you have studied?
IIT Delhi was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I made friends for life, participated in extracurricular activities and had great experiences that I would cherish for life.

Top 5 errors/mistakes according to you that if worked over on the part of students, would take care of the most of the problematic study-related issues during the preparation days.
  •          Missing classes
  •          Not giving quality time and thought on practice problems recommended by teachers
  •          Not taking enough tests
  •          Spending too much time on textbooks or material from other coaching institutes
  •          Not developing a routine for studies
  •          Spending too much time or too little time on a particular topic. You don’t have to master every single topic in the syllabus.

Any message that you will like to give to your successors
Do not stress too much about results. Do not brood over memories of the past and or be anxious about the future. Live in the present moment and give your best.
Just because today was a mess doesn’t mean you cant make tomorrow awesome.
Value your time and do the things that need to be done. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can learn from your mistakes and succeed the next time. Do not regret. Whatever happened was destined to happen only that way.

Any anecdote/experience that changed your life for better
Lately, I have realized that I like to help others. But if I am myself not happy and satisfied, I cant bring a difference to other lives. There would always be ups and downs in life. Sometimes the things would work out the way I want, sometimes they wont. I have a car, sometimes it runs smoothly but sometimes it breaks down. I need to accept that. I truly believe that we could be happy most of the time( I am not saying always) and that would help us lead this life much better. So I would make all effort to be grateful for this life and the opportunities that it has afforded me and be happy, so that I feel empowered and energized to bring a little difference in the lives of people and communities that I get in touch with.

The first exam is called the JEE Main conducted by CBSE. The JEE Main will be conducted on both online and offline modes on different dates. Based on JEE Mains merit list, the candidate is able to get admission into NIT institute. JEE Mains is also the selection test of the candidates those who will eligible to give JEE Advanced.
The merit list is prepared on the basis of JEE Mains score and percentage of 12th board giving 40% weightage to class XII or other qualifying examination and 60% to the performance in JEE Mains Examination.

Exam Pattern of JEE Mains

JEE Mains consists of two papers :
1.       Paper 1 for aspirants of Engineering courses (both online and offline)
2.       Paper 2 for aspirants of Architecture/Planning courses (only offline)

Paper 1 –

1.       The exam will be of three hours duration
2.       30 questions each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics will be asked making total of 90 questions.
3.       All questions are of multiple choice. Each question will have 4 choices out of which only one is correct. 4 marks will be awarded for correct answers and (-)1 for each wrong answers and zero for not attemting it. So it means maximum marks will be 360.

Paper 2 –

The JEE Main paper 2 is only for those who want to take Architecture/Courses and it is not compulsory to write both tests. You can opt to give only Paper 1 and most of the students only give paper 1 for engineering courses.  The paper will consist of objective type questions. The JEE Main paper will consist of 3 parts –
1.       Mathematics
2.       Aptitude Test

Why  choose NIT ?

Getting admission is NITs is a big challenge. Students have to work hard and if they get into NITs they are just brilliant. NITs are among top institutes of India and so the students studying will not face any problem in future. They can build a good career here. NIT gives a student the freedom to explore his mind and to reach his goals in a smarter way.

How to get admissions in NITs ?

The students aspiring to get admission in NITs will have to give a entrance test which is known as JEE Mains ( previously it was known as AIEEE).

The JEE Mains exam is conducted every year in the month of April. Around 14 lakhs students participate in this exam every year. To get admission into these institutes, a student have to secure a overall rank in JEE Mains to be under 20000 to get a decent institute of NIT.

Overall  rank is calculated on the basis of marks obtained in JEE Mains and percentage of 12th board exam. It is 60% JEE Mains and 40% board, but the calculation is not simple as it sounds.
